Your parents went away for the weekend and put you in charge of watching your siblings. Now one of them has a toothache and you're not sure what to do. The first thing you should do is stay calm. If your siblings see you panicking, they might start panicking too. Second, take a look at these simple ways to relieve a toothache with products you probably have at home.

Cool Down the Pain

Toothaches are often accompanied by swelling, which can make the pain even worse. Applying ice packs can help reduce the swelling and relieve the pain. Place a few pieces of ice in a resealable baggie and place the baggie on your sibling's face directly over the painful tooth.

If you don't have ice, you can improvise with a bag of frozen vegetables. The bag of vegetables will act just like an ice pack. You can also make a reusable ice pack that you can refreeze until your parents get home.

Place ½ cup each of water and rubbing alcohol in a resealable baggie. Place the baggie in the freezer and leave it for about an hour. The solution will form a soft slushy consistency. Place the baggie on your siblings face and leave there for several minutes. Repeat several times a day to relieve the pain.

Dab on the Vanilla Extract

If your parents have vanilla extract in the cabinets, you can use it as a topical pain reliever. The ingredients in vanilla extract act as a natural pain killer. Dip a cotton swab in the bottle of extract and rub it on the affected tooth. Repeat the application whenever the pain returns.

If your sibling is old enough to hold something in their mouth, you can pour a small amount of vanilla extract on a cotton ball and place the cotton ball in your sibling's mouth between the gums and the painful tooth.

Mix Up a Saltwater Mouth Wash

If your sibling has an infected tooth, it might be the infection that's causing the pain. Mix 1 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water and have your sibling swish the solution around in their mouth for a minute or two. Have them spit the solution out and swish with a bit more of the solution. Repeat the process until the salt water is gone.

Watching your siblings is a big responsibility. If they're in pain, you want to help them as soon as possible. These home remedies will help you relieve their toothache pain quickly. Be sure to notify your parents as soon as possible so they can get your sibling to the family dentist.
