Pregnancy hormones can interfere with your oral health. These hormones leave your mouth more susceptible to bacteria and infection. In addition, they cause swelling around your gum line. The swelling can result in gums that are sore and painful. While some soreness is expected, bleeding can be a cause for concern and you should contact your dentist if your gums begin to bleed. Sore gums will eventually go away once the pregnancy is over; however, dealing with the pain for months can make you miserable. Luckily, there are few dental rinses that you can use to aid in soothing your sore gums during your pregnancy.

Corydalis Rinse

Corydalis is a natural relaxant and pain reliever that is most commonly used to reduce pain that is caused by muscle tension and arthritis. The herb is commonly taken in capsule form, but in order to be used directly on your gums, it can be turned into a rinse. You can find corydalis in powder form at your local health foods store. Take a few teaspoons of the powder and place it in a small pot of water. Add a slice of fresh lemon to the pot and turn the heat to high. Wait for the mixture to boil, then remove the pot. Place the pot aside and allow the herb to steep for a few hours. When using the rinse, submerge your gums in it. Hold the rinse around your gumline for a few minutes before spitting.

Bay Laurel Rinse

Bay laurel is also known as sweet bay and is sought after for its analgesic properties. The herb is frequently turned into an essential oil and used topically to provide relief for pain that is caused by back aches. You can use the benefits of the herb to soothe your gums during pregnancy. You can create a bay laurel rinse, by adding five drops of the essential oil to a small pot of hot water. Allow the mixture to sit for a few minutes, then use the bay laurel to rinse around your gum line. Leave the rinse in your mouth for a few minutes, then use warm water to remove it. Repeat this process and use the Bay laurel after each meal in order to help soothe your gums.
